Camels originated in North America about 15 million years ago. Geologist Robert Lemmer recently discovered the fossilized bones of a 100,000 year old camel under the parking lot of a bowling alley in Long Beach, California. He wasn't actually looking for a camel at the time, he was looking for earthquake faults. It was the first fossilized remains of any large land vertebrate found in Long Beach. Says city geologist Don Clarke, "It's really kind of cool."
